Vintage Scleroscope Hardness Tester By Coats Tool Company

This fantastic looking scientific instrument is a Vintage Scleroscope Hardness Tester By Coats Tool Company. It is exquisitely engineered and comes with its original wood carry box.

Approximate Box Size:-

  • Width: 19.6cm
  • Height: 50cm
  • Depth: 20.3cm

The instrument is defined as a portable piece of testing equipment but its incredibly heavy!

A scleroscope is a device used to measure rebound hardness based on the elasticity of a material without marking the material under test. The device was invented in 1907 by Shore Instruments Manufacturing Company: see schematic from the original patent:

This particular instrument, No. 22295, probably dates to the 1920s and is in wonderful condition. We think that a few parts are missing, including the rubber pressure squeeze bulb, glass from the magnifier, and the scale: replacements could easily be found for the first two.

The wooden box has internal scuffs and scratches commensurate with age and use.

It still makes for a very interesting display item. A piece of Scientific and Engineering history!

There are printed and metal labels on the instrument with the following information:-

Coats Machine Tool Co. Ltd, London, SW1 No. 22295
