The Thunderstorm Beneath the Summit Japanese Print is based on the original Japanese woodblock print by Hokusai. Katsushika Hokusai (1760 - 1849) was a Japanese artist and printmaker of the Edo period who specialised in Ukiyo-e, a genre of Japanese art and a collaborative system of printing where the artist, carver, printer, and publisher engaged in division of labour. This stylish Japanese picture is part of Hokusai’s woodblock print series ‘Thirty-six view of Mount Fuji’ and depicts Mount Fuji rendered in strong heavy tones. The snowcap rises sharply over the menacing base which has been split by a bolt of lightning.
